Answer 1 :
Just go to www.newegg.com or whatever computer website and go to the laptop section and look for a laptop with at least an i5 core (intel) and 2GB Ram and more than 160 GB HDD. Basically, just look for the best laptop specs in your budget and get it.. also make sure it has good video card too in case you're doing CAD and stuff. Anyway, good luck and let me know if you still need help. Check this laptop out and go on from there: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146613
Answer 2 :
The lifespan of electronic goods is getting shorter and shorter. So any laptop (be it cheap or expensive) is not going to work wonderful after 3 years. If you maintain it very good then it may last another year. So depending on your budget and requirement you can go for a suitable model. E.g. you like lite, and easy to carry then a ultra thin or mobile will do. If you like big screen but don't mind the weight then you can go for 17' laptops. Check cnetasia.com for laptop reviews and selection criteria. Also if you are joining in Uni typically the Uni has subsidized laptop. (try 8flags.com.sg).
Answer 3 :
Which ever your choice may be, Don't get a Atom (far too slow for engineering), have a look at this (free shipping): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00352LQYO?ie=UTF8&tag=a00ba7a-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00352LQYO Its so pack with everything you'll ever need: New Core i5-430M 2.53GHz, which is much more faster than Pentium & "Core 2 Duo". 16-Inch HD LED LCD Display 500GB Hard Drive 4GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT325M It has the latest "USB 3.0" which is 10 times faster than "USB 2.0" Multi-touch touchpad (like iphone) Scratch resistant coating more etc... 3-year long survey proves that ASUS laptop is highly reliable. http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/17/laptop-reliability-survey-asus-and-toshiba-win-hp-fails/ But what's truly unique about this laptop, is that it has the new "NVIDIA Optimus technology". Currently only ASUS's limited laptops has this technology exclusively from Nvidia (No other brand has this). This technology really allows your BATTERY to LAST LONGER. You can find out more here, official site: http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=RZGwDN2NnWZ7NhbH (check out its introduction video) It also comes with: 1 month Zero Bright Dot Guarantee. (if you get even one single bright dot, they'll exchange for free. While others may require 10 & above) 1 year ASUS Accidental Damage Warranty - Drops, Fire, Spill, Surge (others don't have this) 1 year battery pack warranty 1 Year GLOBAL Warranty (free two-way shipping ) 24/7 toll-free phone tech support

Buying an APPLE iPHONE from Singapore and unlocking it
Buying an APPLE iPHONE from Singapore and unlocking it?
ok suppose I buy it from Singapore when i go there next month and bring it home and plug it to my laptop and connect with iTunes. (Only then it will activate...right?) So after I activate it and unlock it using the jailbreak program, can i still plug it and connect it with itunes to sync? Will it get locked? Do I have to insert the original sim that came with the iphone BEFORE i plug it? Or else what happens...does it freeze or summin? Please answer all the questions...

It is not a great deal now. People buy Iphones from everywhere and jailbreak them using softwars. While choosing jailbreaking softwares you have the make sure abou the following points. WHether the version is in tune with Iphone updates. Whether they offer after sales services Whether they offer easy guidelines I have used http://www.easyiphoneunlocking.com/index3.html and I found answers to all my questions. I also got loads of bonus with the jail breaking software. I followed the instructions and I am happy

I don't know which part of Singapore you live in, but I live in the East, so here you could go to Level 4 of Century Square in Tampines. BEST store. It's a big store and it is an official Apple resaler. I went there just a few days ago and I saw silicone shell cases for mac book. Not sure if it's the one you want, but I saw that they had one. If you live somewhere else, just find a big electronics store that is an official Apple resaler store, find a big one where they sell accessories like cases too. It's quite easy to find actually

Some hotels provide free wifi, but fret not, almost all major shopping malls provide it for free, even macdonalds, starbucks... http://www.infocomm123.sg/wireless_at_sg/coverage_areas;jsessionid=C52EF1580989E15F34A1A1951C783821
Answer 2 :
Some hotels do offer free wifi or have it bundled into their prices. You have to check with the hotel you are staying in We also have the Wireless@SG initiative where most of the shopping centres are wired up with free wifi. just look for the Wireless@SG ssid. You probably need to sign up (stupid thing for a free service, I always forget my user id and password and have signed up at least twice) More info at the website: http://www.ida.gov.sg/Programmes/2006102.

Answer 1 :
Taiwan is generally considered the home of computer manufacturing. If you have a friend or relative that has access to merchandise from within Taiwan, without having to pay taxes or duties, this is probably your cheapest alternative. However, you'll end up with a computer made for non-english speakers, so the keyboard may not be standard, etc. Your choice

Answer 1 :
Of course.
Answer 2 :
Yes but bring headphones.
Answer 3 :
Yes, no problem bringing a laptop. Bring an extra battery, as most airlines only have "power ports" (for which you need an adapter) in business and first class.
Answer 4 :
Yes you can, I bring my laptop with me when traveling. It especially helps when the movie they play on board is not interesting. Just remember to keep it safe during your trip.
Answer 5 :
Yes you can. Once the plane is on cruising altitude, you can start using your computer
Answer 6 :
Yes, but if your laptop has a Wireless card in it, you should turn it off. Also, when the flight attendants tell you to turn it off when your taking off, PLEASE LISTEN! It's for a good reason.
Answer 7 :
a 30 hour flight? where the flip are you flying from? Anyways to answer your question, yes it's fine to take your laptop, you just have to turn it off during takeoff and landing. Once the plane is in the air you can use it all you want. But do you really have the battery life to last you 30 hours?
Answer 8 :
you can... but from what i understand only during steady flight... not during take off and landing... so yeah... feel free to take it with you... just ask about the take off and landing thing... any airport staff other than janitors and security should know
Answer 9 :
Yes, you can as long as you're not online. You can watch movies and listen to your music/cds or work offline

I like the Dell Latitude series, I own one and never had a problem with it.
Answer 2 :
i recomend getting the macbook. its a very high tech computer. if i could get it, i would for the following reasons: 1. you will never get a virus on it 2. you can run vista on a mac 3. you wont have nightmares with upgrades theres alot more reasons why macs are better than pc's. although there are some downsides, like it might get scratched if u dont care for it good, like an ipod. but for the most part it is better than a regular laptop. if u want something better that wont scratch get the macbook pro. its more expensive but its better than the macbook. a macbook with 120 gig hard drive is about 1300 dollars

Answer 2 :
Maybe you'll change your mind if you see this Latitude model http://unlockforus.blogspot.com/2007/09/latitude-d630-ultimate-business.html
Answer 3 :
Do you mean second hand? If not, Dell isn't a brand that you can not buy outside of their own stores. That's part fo their formula. This is the Singapore website: http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=sg&l=en&s=gen&~ck=cr You're probably going to have to order it and have it send to your hotel. Do note that you will need to check how it works out with service and support. It could well be that your local Dell officed will not accept your laptop for that. Also, keep in mind that import taxes will get added to the cost when you import it again in your own country.
Answer 4 :
If you have a contact in singapore where you will be living, you can order from the dell singapore site i.e. http://www.dell.com.sg, dell has the best deals online, if you would like to get yourself a cheap laptop from singapore. I myself selected the Vostro 1400 a week back. It was a great deal

Answer 1 :
Japan is teh shit.
Answer 2 :
Experience has taught me that support is as important as the price, and, you can get a "lemon" at any time from any manufacturer. Strongly suggest you buy close to home from a reputable dealer who offers a warranty and support. HP comes to mind.
Answer 3 :
Shanghai or Hong Kong §§
Answer 4 :
if i were to choose id choose singapore, down in singapore theres a place there called vivo city.. you can find low prices of laptos there. ASUS laptops are great when it comes to these categories or better yet buy yourself a macbook ;D

I'm in the military and I'm deployed to Afghanistan and when I log onto yahoo and see the top Yahoo news stories, its always stuff happening in Singapore (i guess my laptop sends a signal there, idk) and no disrespect to them but I really don't care and would rather read news from the states. Is there a way to change this?

Items acceptable for Cabin Checked In Baggage-Singapore Airlines
Items acceptable for Cabin Checked In Baggage-Singapore Airlines?
Would there be charges taking 2 laptops and 3 netbooks inside Singapore Airlines (Cabin Baggage)? I checked with their Website (singaporeair.com) but I could not find their clear regulations and limitations when it comes to these.
Air Travel - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Last time I flew with Singapore Airlines I was told that my carry-on bag could only weigh 7 kg. They actually made me weigh my carry-on bag and when it was over the limit, I ended up checking in that piece of luggage. Typically airlines allow 1 carry-on to go into the overhead bin and 1 personal item to go under the seat in front of you. http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_UK/content/before/plan/cabin_baggage.jsp
Answer 2 :
As mentioned they do have a rather strict policy of maximum 7kg per cabin bag, and I would not try to exceed this with valuable items such as laptops & netbooks. Assuming you are taking them for people and do not intend to return with all of them, you could either choose to ship them or carry the least valuable in your checked luggage (not something I would recommend!)

Is there a Dell store where you can buy the laptops
Is there a Dell store where you can buy the laptops?
I've convinced my mom to get me a Dell 10 Inch Mini for my birthday, since all I usually do is go on the internet. But shes not too happy about the idea that it has to be ordered from the internet, and shipped to our house. Is there any Dell store? I looked it up and found there was one in Singapore, which is way too far away.
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
To my knowledge there isn't a Dell store like the Apple stores. However, some places that sell Dell PCs may be Dell partners, and may be able to get you the configuration you want. The first place to look is any local shops you know of that sell Dell PCs. You might also check local PC repair shops that sell PCs, or even your ISP if it is a small, local ISP that will sell computers.
Answer 2 :
No Dell stores, only AppleStores. I would stay away from Dell which makes low-end junk. Read a few pages here and see that the majority of real problems are with the Dells

Some question on Customs in Singapore
Some question on Customs in Singapore?
I would go to Singapore at 3rd July. I want to bring my laptop with me. I am afraid Customs check my laptop. Is it true? What's your suggestion on bringing laptop to Singapore? I am from Indonesia. I live at Jakarta. In Soekarno-Hatta Airport, there is also some inspection. And, Changi too? If Changi too, I am afraid Customs would inspect my laptop.
Singapore - 6 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Why worries ? Nothings wrong carry one Laptop with you . Oh , DONT download any X sex film in HDD.or carry with you CD/DVD in X , this will case big trouble. Our customs will care for this.( software is "COPY" okay.)
Answer 2 :
instead of open view. Of course illegal files or videos are not allowed. Would be better if you encrypted the confidential files and stealth it.
Answer 3 :
When I visit Singapore in last 2005, I saw a passenger to carry a laptop and passed the customs without any question. You can collect necessary information, you need, from Website using Yahoo.
Answer 4 :
Hi im Indonesia living in Singapore Dont worry As long as you dont bring harmful stuff inside no worries
Answer 5 :
Hey there, I have recently been through the arrival and departure customs in Singapore. Basically, they will just tell you to take it out when it goes through scanning. This is because of the radiation or something, it can spoil your laptop. Usually, they won't check your laptop, as imagine, if a whole plane has 50 business passengers with laptops, how are they supposed to check each and every laptop? Unless, you've decided to put some drugs into your CPU, haha. Otherwise, singapore customs usually take anywhere from 45min to 1h + to clear. Have a safe trip!
Answer 6 :
No worries, they won't inspect the contents of your laptop. Hundreds if not thousands of business travelers with laptops fly to Singapore everyday. They don't have time to scan each and every harddisk :) You can even bring a few pieces of *pirated* CDs, just make sure it's a FEW, and not a whole box of it. They will usually just let you through

No point arguing and its your words against the foriegn ISP. The trick is to check into hotels that offer free internet or charge a low daily fee. Get a Gmail and a Skype account you can use in internet cafe and for you to skype home cheaply

On entrance to Singapore did they check for my laptop ore ipod content?
Do I have to be aware of anything about custums check at Changi? If I have my return ticket after 30 days is it possible to stamp the entrance visa for few days than that? Did they ask evem for the return tiket? Thank you in advance.
Singapore - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
No, they don't check your laptop nor ipod content. I'm not sure about the visa stamp. I travel to Singapore quite often and they don't ask for a return ticket.
Answer 2 :
I wouldn't worry about your laptop or ipod: they're more interested in cigarettes and chewing gum (don't bring either!). Singapore immigration are unlikely to ask for your return ticket but your airline might when you check in. Any return ticket should be ok though. You'll probably get a 30 day stamp when you arrive but you can extend it (you can even extend it online at www.ica.gov.sg) or you can cross the bridge to Malaysia and get a new stamp when you come back. However the stamp when coming back from Malaysia will more likely be 14 days.
Answer 3 :
The customs officers will not check the content of you laptop or ipod unless there is a tip off. As for the entrance visa, it really depends on the country that you come from some people get 30 day others get 14 days. The immigration usually does not ask for your return ticket but may at times ask to see if you are financially ok to spend 14/30days in the country ie having enough cash (some friends from thailand have told me the immigration dept told them they need at least S$500 about USD$300) or some credit cards etc. One last thing, if your return ticket is after your visa expiry date then you can either go to the immigration dept which is located at 10 Kallang Road ICA Building Singapore 208718 (Next to Lavender MRT station) Tel: 6391 6100 Fax: 6298 0843 / 6298 0837 Website: http://www.ica.gov.sg Email: ica_feedback@ica.gov.sg Or you can just take a day trip into malaysia if you go via bus it should cost you no more than USD$1 and on the return leg you will probably get an extended visa for 2 week from the day you return. Oh point to add ... had a friend once who had 30 days visa and decided to visit malaysia for a day trip after the 3rd day in singapore ... upon returning he only had 14 days visa and not the original dates. Have fun

Is it cheap and technologically advisable to buy it in Singapore? How are the price? How can I do this search when I get off there? How can I make payments? Any good recommendations on shops?

Should I buy a laptop in India or Singapore
Should I buy a laptop in India or Singapore?
I live in India and 'd be visiting s'pore in early 2007. I am planning to buy a laptop, where shud I buy it (keeping in mind the price difference, warranty, other factors etc.)? In short, 'd it be worth it to buy it in s'pore (My budget is INR 40000-45000)!

Well you can do but then its horrible trying to get service if something goes wrong and actually I think they are cheaper in the states.
Answer 2 :
it depends were ur going to stay if u return to india u should buy it from there so they can fix any problems and in singapore if ur going to stay there ur whole life
Answer 3 :
I would by it from whoever has the best support and return/warranty policy for the laptop you get...
Answer 4 :
hi there. About the price, laptops have different kinds of prices depending on their characteristics and power. about your budget, i have no idea about the conversion of your money since i live here in italy. .. anyway, lets say that there is a laptop that have the same characteristics in india and singapore and lets just say (hypothetically!) that in singapore is a little bit cheaper, maybe $50 in difference (according to the global price market). If you buy that laptop in singapore which is cheaper, and you bring that on your home country, what if that laptop have some factory defects? Are you gonna go back to singapore just to return your defective laptop? remember that the guaranty and warranty of a merchandise is only applicable on the store where you bought it.. are you willing to spend more money and time just to save a couple of bucks? If you buy your laptop in your country, anytime you can bring the product back and let them fix it under the warranty period without spending even a cent. be a smart buyer. hope my answer enlightened you.. ciao!

I would like to buy a laptop. New to Singapore. Which is the best season here in singapore to buy?

december
Answer 2 :
For all computer stuff, you can try Funan shopping centre (located near City Hall MRT station) for quality goods or Sim Lim Square (located between Little India or bugis MRT station) for bargain stuff. One trick is to really know your stuff well before going to these 2 places if not you will be ended up as a carrot (deliciously chop and strew) and always ask for a discount especially in Sim Lim Square. Singapore have 4 IT conventions per year - 2 at Suntec and 2 at Expo Changi. Next IT convention should be at Suntec during December. Every time there is a IT convention, It products have a drop in their retail prices. (That means every 3 mths, there is a marginal cut price for almost all IT products.) You should visit the IT convention to know the latest laptop prices and model but you do not need to buy them on spot. Compare the prices and do your homework on the IT specs before deciding on your prefered model.
Answer 3 :
x-mas..coz got lotza promotions /items on sale during e festy period!!
Answer 4 :
for IT stuff, when the price goes rock bottom, you might have lose interest in it as it is way behind fad.... there is not really any best season except during christmas, the IT gadget expos in suntec or Expo. What you need to do is know what requirements you want for your comp and start shopping around, scours the newspapers for the offers on friday and saturday especially. SIM Lim and Funan are places you should hang out and had a gauge of the market price.
Answer 5 :
Definitely during SITEX or some other computers/electronics fair. They have about 2 or 3 such fairs in a year. You can get quality laptops at lower prices together with loads of freebies

To tell you the truth HP is a very good place to buy a laptop, But I went with dell And I realy thing there th best.
Answer 2 :
Electronic stuff are way cheaper in Singapore. There's a place where you can survey around the shops and get the best bargain for your laptop, in a mall called Sim Lim.
Answer 3 :
Low Yat Plaza at Bukit Bintang in the city of Kuala Lumpur is one of the popular location where you can get a good bargain for computers and IT products.
Answer 4 :
Singapore is always a good place to buy electronics and IT equipment. Apart from big departmental stores like Best Denki, Courts or Harvey Norman, it is recommended that you go to Sim Lim Square or Funan Centre to purchase your laptop as they offer a wide variety of computer shops. Prices at Sim Lim Square are likely to be lower than at Funan Centre. For a HP laptop, you can also try their online website to see what existing offers are available. You can even purchase a HP laptop online, same for Dell laptops.

How will I use a US Wii and laptop when I go to Singapore this summer, since they have different voltage there
How will I use a US Wii and laptop when I go to Singapore this summer, since they have different voltage there
Do I need an adapter, and, if so, are they safe to use, and is there a chance of damaging my equipment? I also have a DS, which charges by plugging into the wall. Also, where could I find such an electrical adapter.

Answer 1 :
Yeah, you'll need an adapter. WalMart carries them in the luggage aisle. You can get them at the shops in some airports too, but they're more expensive there.
Answer 2 :
laptop ususally come with switching power suppplies so the only thing you ned is a physical adapter to the local wall socket as the adapter works from 100 to 250 V . i do not know whether the wii uses an switching power supply. if it does not, you need to convert the voltage to what it is expecting using a transformer. a good place is http://www.world-import.com/ You will also need to make sure the tv can handle the signal from the wii. most recent tv can display any tv signal (PAL/SECAM/NTSC)

Like me, get the MSI GT680R 15.6"-full HD GAMING NOTEBOOK which comes with the 2nd Generation Core i7 Processor 2630QM, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB Hard Disk Drive (2 x 500GB 7200rpm SATA HDD) & a powerful Class 1, 1.5GB NVIDIA GTX460M DDR5 dedicated graphics card that can handle DirectX 11 enhancing the 3D detail effects from FRYS.com (SKU#: 6547393). I was free for the day so I hung around the store and got to use the laptop first hand. I came back to check out the laptop every hour for 6 hrs and found out that the air from the vent of the laptop remained cool compared to any other laptops on display there, meaning this laptop has proper heat management, that means this laptop can handle long hours of gruelling play. Now, I'm all stewed up saving to buy this b4 Blizzard releases Diablo 3. The MSI GT680R 15.6" Gaming Notebook w/ the Intel® Core™ i-7 retails for $1,499.99 (+ tax & other sur-charges). I chose to pay more to have the newest technology so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS. click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152239 Are you a game enthusiasts playing for long hours? Get a COOLER MASTER U2 Notebook Cooler w/c has dual purposes. Cool thing about it is that you can position the fans on the right spot for better ventialation. When travelling, detach the easily detacheable dual fan, & you can use the aluminum frame as a protection for your laptop's LCD screen when inside the bag. I got mine from MicroCenter.com for 48% cheaper than the regular $24.99 tag (FRYS.com SKU#: 6344931). click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997730 If you're a lil' bit low on budget, get the next best thing. The msi GE620-021 15.6" Gaming Notebook also features a 2nd Generation Intel Core i7 Processor 2630QM & 8GB DDR3 RAM, just 640GB HDD, but only a Class 2, 1GB NVIDIA GT540M dedicated graphics card that can also handle DirectX 11 effects from FRYS.com (SKU#: 6539123). The ASUS N53SV-XR1 for $949.99 sounds 150dollars cheaper, but comes with only 4GB of memory. click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152258 Core i-3, better than Core 2 Duo Core i-5, better than Core i-3 Core i-7, better than Core i-5 Just remember these: The 1st thing you should look for on the computer surface is A LOGO STICKER for NVIDIA or ATI MOBILITY RADEON just below the keyboard. This SHOWS that the laptop has A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD (for AutoCAD & Adobe Photoshop). Diablo III, the game I would love most to play runs on 3D graphics & is rumored to need at least 1GB GRAPHICS MEMORY (lower graphics memory = CHEAPER laptop price), so always check the system requirement specs on the game's box (ex. SIMS 3; see if your laptop meets all the requirements). Gamers, make sure the GRAPHICS CARD on the laptop IS ONLY from the HIGH END or MIDRANGE. Next important aspect is the RAM (memory). If you're in designing & you need to run applications like AutoCAD or softwares for editing photos & videos, just make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 RAM modules in it (HIGHER IS BETTER; DDR3 & DDR5 are faster & newer types of memory modules that came out). But what makes a computer really run fast? It is it's processor! So if you really want your processor to have computing prowess & you're able to run different applications simultaneously, make sure it's AS EFFICIENT AS an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (Centrino 2 is a Core 2 Duo featuring power saving capabilities; Quad Core is for gaming fanatics). A Core 2 Duo is like having 2 motors running the computer each independent of the other w/c means for a Quad Core, it's like 4 motors are running the machine (that means it will run faster & more efficient even if its frequency is lower to that of a Core 2 Duo). Intel: Core 2 Duo, Centrino 2, Quad Core, Core i-3, Core i-5 & Core i-7 are all very much faster & better than an Intel: DUAL CORE, PENTIUM, CELERON, ATOM & their more affordable AMD counterparts. Just make sure you have AT LEAST 2GHz of speed on your processor. The HDD (Hard Disc Drive) should be at least 320GB. The average laptop LCD screen size is 15.4". If you want something smaller than that w/ these facts I just shed some light on, expect the price to go higher (ex. for 13.3" & 14.1" LCD screens). FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life.
